Until 1967 only one award was given for both leagues. Born in Van Nuys, California, Drysdale spent his entire 14-year major league career with the Dodgers. He joined them in 1956 when they were in Brooklyn and moved with the club to Los Angeles in 1958. His 17-13 win-loss record in 1959 included a league-leading 242 strikeouts and an appearance in the All-Star game. He was the winner of game three in the 1959 World Series as the Dodgers defeated the Chicago White Sox in six games. The following year he led his club in wins and topped the NL for the second straight season with 246 strikeouts. In 1962 he led the league with a 25-9 record, in strikeouts (232), and in innings pitched (314), to win the Cy Young Award. His 19-17 record in 1963 propelled the Dodgers into the World Series and he threw a complete game in a four-game sweep of the New York Yankees. He posted his second season with 20 or more wins in 1965. In 1968 he threw six straight shutouts to achieve a scoreless streak of 58 innings-a record that held until fellow Dodger Orel Hershiser broke it in 1988.

Drysdale retired at the age of 33 after injuring his shoulder. He left the game with career totals of 209 wins, 49 shutouts, 2486 strikeouts, and a 2.95 earned run average (ERA). He worked as a radio broadcaster for the Dodgers until he died of a heart attack while in MontrÃƒÃƒÃƒÃƒÃƒÃƒÃƒÃ‚Â©al to announce a game. He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1984.
